As a freelance coach for Real Life Learning, I recently had the opportunity to travel to Crewe for a team training and strategy day. The experience left me feeling incredibly inspired and connected, both personally and professionally. The day was not just about learning new strategies but also about fostering a sense of community and shared values, which are so crucial when working in the neurodiversity space.
Supporting Neurodivergent Clients: My Focus for the Day
The topic I offered to speak on was particularly close to my heart and was...
How to support and navigate working with clients who have newly diagnosed neurodivergent conditions.
Many people go undiagnosed for years, and the impact this can have on their confidence and self-esteem is profound. For these individuals, being undiagnosed can mean living with an invisible set of challenges that affect both their personal and professional lives, often without the support systems they need to thrive.
During my talk, I emphasised the importance of understanding these challenges not only for our own growth as coaches but also for the success of our clients. Many barriers to success—be they emotional, mental, or logistical—need to be identified and addressed to truly support neurodivergent individuals on their journey to wellbeing and growth.
Key Takeaways from the Day
One of the things I personally took away from the day was the feeling of being part of a team. As someone who is neurodivergent myself, I find that my energy and overall wellbeing are recharged when I’m surrounded by like-minded people, especially when we share common goals and values. The connection I felt on the day truly filled my battery and reminded me of the power of community.
Additionally, the discussions around barriers to success were eye-opening. It’s crucial not only to focus on our own personal development but also to ensure that our clients can recognise and overcome any barriers that might be preventing them from making the changes necessary for their wellbeing. Awareness is the first step toward change, and our role as coaches is to guide that awareness.
Finally, we explored the importance of having a clear understanding of values. Values are at the core of our behaviors and lived experiences, influencing the choices we make throughout our lives. When we help our clients align their actions with their values, we empower them to navigate life’s challenges with more confidence and authenticity.
